WEEK 16: Final Frontiers: Augmented Reality

New media artist Meredith Drum visited with us in our final week of classes and demonstrated the Oyster City project  she has been working on using  GPS enabled Augmented Reality technology . She also brought her iPad along so we could play with a new AR project called PYRITE recently showcased at the Miami art fair,  developed with her team Augmented Mountain, where you can transform an image into a virtual sculpture!
Here are some of my screenshots of her presentation made using the SkyView app, another kind of augmented reality (tricky!) Thanks Meredith, great presentation and wonderful way to end our semester long adventures in Science and Cinema. T_T

  1. without a doubt one of the most interesting lectures I've seen because of how informing it was in terms of how someone goes about creating something like this, and also because I completely agree with Meredith that this is definitely a wave of the future, it almost merges the digital and real world.
Peaople love windows, even the metaphorical ones, such as Tv's, Movie Theaters and computer monitors, using that iPad felt like a window to a different world

very cool, definitely could and should be a class

  2. This lecture pushed the boundaries of art and media interacting with a physical space. It was really interesting to see how new augmented reality technology will begin affecting social networks, advertising, etc. I agree with Josh that there should definitely be a class on this.

  3. If I could ever say my mind was blown, then this lecture did it! Wow, what a presentation on Augmented Reality that Meredith presented. Her work was fascinating to say the least, especially her Oyster City project. I could imagine in the future with their own augmented reality at any location that they see fit. This seems to be a quick rising trend that will only continue to grow. Who knows, maybe in the future everything will be an augmented reality...
