Collaborative map projection

After watching Jacqueline Goss's flash animation THERE THERE SQUARE we each drew a map of the United States on individual transparencies and laid them on top of each other on the overhead projector, see?

  1. What's kind of interesting, and obvious, is that despite each map being similar in size and shape, each one reflects a different layer of detail. Some include the great lakes, some include more accurate representations of coastlines. The combination of these different layers of detail develop the cartographic impulse. The desire to show as much as possible but in a simple and understandable manner. Here we have the United States built up upon one another forming an impressive display of how the group views america, all with the same idea in mind but expressing it differently.
